Temperament

Fearless, alert, persistent and devoted, sometimes full of quick-tempered passion. He is an agreeable family dog in all aspects.

History

Originally used as a housedog in the region of Southern Germany. His ancestors were depicted by Albrecht Dürer (1471 ? 1528) in his woodcuts. First entries of Affenpinscher go back to the year 1879. These Toy dogs were very popular around the turn of the century, they evolved from the rough coated Pinschers. The harsh ring of hair around the head emphasised the monkey-like expression. The colours ranged from self coloured yellowish, reddish or grey-white to dark grey, black-grey and pure black.

Care

Although an energetic and active dog, the exercise needs of the affenpinscher can be met with vigorous indoor games or romps in the yard, or with short walks on leash. He enjoys playing outside, but cannot live outdoors. His harsh coat needs combing two or three times weekly, plus shaping every three months. Shaping for pets is by clipping or stripping.

The Affenpinscher is active and energetic. Their exercise needs can be met with indoor play sessions on a regular basis. They do well as apartment or condominium dwellers provided they are taken for daily leashed walks. They also enjoy a chance to run, so a small fenced yard is ideal. The Affenpinscher tends to climb and bark so supervision is required in the outdoor setting.

Grooming, socialization, training.

Health

The Affenpinscher requires minimal grooming. Their harsh coat must never be clipped short as this will ruin it for many years. Brushing and combing weekly is a must, plucking done when necessary. They will occasionally have stray hairs that grow in the corners of the eyes that cause irritation; they should be removed immediately. The Affenpinscher is prone to slipped stifle, open fontanel, and respiratory problems.

Training

The training must be consistent and varied. It easily understands the commands. It likes to play with people.

Coat & grooming

The fur needs to be brushed regularly. Man should pay attention to avoid getting the dog hair in its eyes for not irritate them.

Fun facts

Sensitive to temperature extremes. Like any short-nosed breed, the Affenpinscher may suffer from respiratory problems in hot weather. And like most toy breeds, they become chilled in cold weather. Tends to guard food and toys. Not recommended for younger
