Temperament
Quick, attentive, distant, reserved with strangers and may even be unapproachable, but he can be gentle and affectionate with those he is willing to accept.
History
It is an African sighthound of afro-asian type which appeared in Europe towards 1970 and comes from the Nigerian middle basin, among others from the valley of the Azawakh. For hundreds of years he has been the companion of the nomads of the South-Sahara.
Care
The Azawakh is a highly active breed that requires a highly active owner. This breed is not recommended for apartment living. They do best with a large securely fenced yard or rural setting with ample opportunity to run. They excel in field hunting, lure coursing, and agility. Azawakh's enjoy free-play, family activities, hiking, jogging, and swimming.
Close supervision with strangers, leash, fenced yard, socialization and training.
Health
The Azawakh breed requires occasional brushing. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo. Dry shampooing will suffice. It is important to regularly check the ears and paw pads. This breed is prone to such health issues as seizures, myositis, spondylosis, and auto-immune problems. Azawakh's do not do well in colder climates.
Training
It is an independent dog, which is harder to train. It is recommended to be trained by a person with experience. The train must be done with lot of patience, to be firm, but gentle, friendly to win the dog trust and respect. With a severe attitude, good results can be obtained.
Coat & grooming
The fur doesn't need too much care. A casual brushing is enough.
