Temperament
In its everyday life the Borzoi has a quiet and balanced character. At the sight of game it gets suddenly excited. It has a piercing sight, capable of seeing very far. Its reaction is impetuous.
History
The Russkaya Psovaya Borzaya has been an integral part of the national culture and Russian history for 9 centuries. The French Chronicle of the XIth century shows that three Borzois accompanied the daughter of the Grand Duke of Kiev, Anna Iaroslavna when she arrived in France to become the wife of Henri I. Among the owners and breeders there were many famous people including Tsars and poets : Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Nicolas II, Pushkin, Turgenev. The creation of the famous kennel « Pershinskaya okhota » by the illustrious breeders the Grand Duke Nicolai Nicolaevitch and Dimitri Valtsev had great importance. From the end of the XIXth century, the Borzoi is seen in the biggest breeding kennels of Europe and America.
Care
The Borzoi needs the chance to exert itself daily. Although a long walk can satisfy most of his needs, it should be combined with a sprint in a large safe area. The coat, which is characteristically fuller on males, needs brushing or combing two or three times a week; at times he sheds a lot. Borzois do best as house dogs with access to a yard.
The Russian Wolfhound will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. However, they do best in a home with a securely fenced yard. They make excellent walking and jogging companions provided they are very securely leashed. This breed displays talent in lure coursing, hunting, and sighting.
Exercise, high fenced yard, grooming, leash, positive training and early socialization.
Health
Russian Wolfhound's require regular brushing of the coat with a firm bristle brush. Bathing should only be done when necessary. It is important to keep the paw pads trimmed to prevent splaying. This breed is sensitive to medication. They are prone to bloat and should be fed two to three small meals per day. All exercise should be avoided after meals.
Training
The training of this dof must be done by a person with experience, because it is not very submissive. With a firm, consequent training, without being harsh or severe, satisfying results can be achieved.
Coat & grooming
The fur of this dog needs a regularly combing and brushing. The hair between the pads of the legs must be removed.
Fun facts
Though he can live indoors, the Borzoi needs regular exercise. Likes to roam and chase and is incredibly fast - in the city, he should only be let off lead in a safe enclosed space. Not to be trusted with small pets such as cats and rabbits unless raised
