Temperament

Happy and alert, this breed has a great presence. Easy to handle, and affectionate, this breed would make an ideal house pet if given the right care and exercise to keep him happy. This breed requires a gentle, yet somewhat firm hand, as they can be hyperactive.

History

Of French origin and more precisely, from the centre of Brittany. At present, in first place numerically among French sporting breeds. Probably one of the oldest of the spaniel type dogs, improved at the beginning of the 20th century by diverse outcrosses and selections. A draft of a breed standard drawn up in Nantes in 1907 was presented and adopted at the first General Assembly held in Loudéac (in former Côtes du Nord department, now Côtes d?Armor), June 7, 1908. This was the first standard of the « Naturally Short-Tailed Brittany Spaniel Club ».

Care

The Brittany is generally a hardy dog that requires little maintenance. Her major requirement is for abundant exercise, at least an hour of exertion every day. She is a social dog that needs human interaction. Her coat is not particularly thick or long, but it does require brushing once or twice weekly.

A medium sized yard is a must for this rambunctious breed. This breed has plenty of stamina to keep you on your toes and does require regular exercise. Would do best in a home with at least a medium sized yard, and an active owner.

Exercise, a job or activity, and training.

Health

A relatively light shedding breed, this dog does require regular brushing to keep coat from becoming matted. Bathing once a month is recommended. Some trimming is necessary if to be used for show.

Training

It is a dog which is easily to train because it is submissive, intelligent, and learns fast. With a calm tone, a soft voice, a consequent attitude, good results can be obtained.

Coat & grooming

A casual brushing is enough for keeping the fur, for not getting tangled.

Fun facts

The Brittany likes to roam. Some skilled trimming of the coat is needed for proper grooming. Generally a low-maintenance dog, Brittanys need extensive exercise. Best for an active outdoors person or hunter.
