Temperament
Courage, determination and outstanding braveness are part of its characteristics. With its owners and family it is docile, obedient and extremely tolerant with children. Its loyalty is proverbial, insistingly seeking the company of its master.
One of its characteristics is its aloofness towards strangers. It displays a calm disposition, distinctive self-assurance and self-confidence, remaining unperturbed by strange noises or circumstances. An unsurpassed guardian of properties, it also instinctively indulges in big game hunting and cattle herding.
Care
A fenced in large yard is required for this large and lively breed. Recommended for country living, the Fila Brasileiro can also do well in home life if given sufficient exercise. Requires regular walks and free roaming exercise.
Firm but positive training, leash, securely fenced yard, socialization and supervision at all times.
Health
Brushing with a firm bristle brush will be sufficient for this shorthaired breed. Average shedding, a wipe down with a damp washcloth should remove any loose hair. Bathe only when necessary. The Fila Brasileiro should be protected from cold weather considering the very short, smooth coat.
Training
It must be trained by a person with a lot of experience who knows how to make the dog understand who is the master. Being a dog with a difficult character, the training must be firm, without being harsh, made with calm, patience because it is sensitive to the tone of the voice. It is a dog which responds fast and has aggressive instincts. Nevertheless, if the training is made accordingly and it has a proper master, it can be devoted and submissive.
Coat & grooming
This dog doesn't require too much grooming. The brushing of the fur made occassionallyand especially during the moulting period is enough.
