Temperament

A lively and agile breed, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is deeply devoted and affectionate to their family. They are extremely people oriented and do well with considerate children. They do not do well if left alone for extended periods of time and may become destructive or bark excessively. They are not well suited for a two career family. They get along well with other dogs; however, caution and care must be taken with other small household pets and cats. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is loyal, responsive, and trustworthy.

History

Already mentioned by Xenophon, used as « oysel dog » widespread in the whole of Europe under different names. The breed was renewed and improved by inbreeding, selection and training without any addition of foreign blood by E.K. Korthals during the second half of the 19th century. Since, the different national clubs have remained faithful to its precepts.

Care

The wirehaired pointing griffon needs daily exertion, either in the form of jogging, games or a run in the field. He particularly enjoys swimming. He does best when allowed to be both an indoor and outdoor dog. His harsh coat needs combing or brushing once or twice a week, plus hand-stripping to remove dead hair twice a year. His ears need regular cleaning and plucking of hair within the canal in order to avoid ear problems.

With a tremendous energy level, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon needs an inordinate amount of exercise. In addition to being a fine hunting companion, this breed also enjoys jogging with their master and swimming as much as possible. They are not suited for apartment dwelling or for sedentary owners. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon does best in a country setting where they have the opportunity to romp and run.

Firm training, a job or activity to do, and socialization.

Health

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon needs to be brushed and combed twice weekly. Professional stripping and trimming of the coat needs to be done twice a year to keep them looking their best. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo. It is important to keep their ears clean and free of hair. This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, elbow, eye, and thyroid problems.

Training

It is an intelligent dog, wishful to make pleasure to its master, which understands easy what is requested, therefore the training is not difficult. For all that the training should be still firm, consequent, but gentle, cosy and varied in order to don't get it bored. It has good results to different canine sports.

Coat & grooming

This fur dog must brushed and combed regularly, for taking off the dead hair bristles and to keep the pleasant look.

Fun facts

Some stripping and trimming of coat needed for showing. Pet dogs look best if groomed professionally twice a year. Needs a tremendous amount of exercise to stay calm and happy. Best in a country setting with plenty of opportunity for running exercise. Bew
