Temperament

This breed has been used in herding so he does have a protective instinct, which makes him not quite right for the average family. However, he can do well with children providing they are always supervised. The Kuvasz is also very gentle and affectionate towards his family.

History

The Kuvasz is a long established, ancient Hungarian Shepherd Dog. His ancestors came into the Carpathian basin at the time of occupation by the Magyars. These dogs were needed to watch and guard their flocks against beasts of prey and thieves. Because of his hunting instinct, the Kuvasz was the preferred hunting dog at the time of King Matthias Corvinus. Since the decline in stock-herding, he has much less been used for his original duties and he has settled in villages and later even in towns.

Care

The kuvasz needs daily exercise and enjoys a long walk or good run in a safe area. He does best when allowed access to both house and yard. His coat needs brushing one or two times weekly, more often during heavy shedding periods.

The Kuvasz should have regular exercise, preferably daily. This breed bores easily and can become destructive without the proper entertainment, so he should always have room to run. A medium fenced yard will suffice.

Health

The Kuvasz should be brushed on a regular basis all the way down to the undercoat. This will remove excess hair during shedding, and will keep the hair free from mats. This breed does best in colder climates mentally, and physically. In warmer climates, the Kuvasz tends to shed quite a bit all year round, while in cooler weather, he sheds seasonally.

Training

It needs a firm but gentle training, well ballanced and consequent. It must be trained by a person with experience in training that gives it the chance of achieving self confidence.

Coat & grooming

It needs a lot of brushing during the moulting periods, especially in spring time when is loosing a lot of hair.

Fun facts

The Kuvasz is not a breed for everyone. His large size and strong protective instincts demand extra owner care and responsibility. Don't leave this dog alone in the backyard for long stretches of time, as he can become destructive. Thorough exercising wil
