Temperament
His principal function as a guard and defense dog of flocks and property in general, asserts itself in the manner he accomplishes these tasks, with perception, he can also show a devoted attachment to his master and all his entourage.
History
This ancient breed of dogs who guard flocks comes from shepherd dogs actually still used in the Abruzzes where the breeding of sheep is still thriving even in these days, and sheepdogs which existed yesteryear in the region of the Tuscan Maremma and in that of Latium. Most especially since 1860, the seasonal moving of livestock from one region to another has favoured the developing of a natural crossing of those two primitive breeds.
Care
The Maremma Sheepdog breed is not recommended for apartment or city living. This breed requires a rural setting and an inordinate amount of physical exercise and mental stimulation. They do best with room to roam and must have a job to do.
Health
The Maremma Sheepdog breed must have regular brushing to remove loose and dead hair. Extra attention should be given during heavy shedding periods. The ears and paw pads should be checked often for debris. Due to their rarity and selective breeding, the Maremma Sheepdog has no known health issues. They are not suited for warm climates.
Training
It needs a firm and consequent training but without being tough, harsh. It doesn't follow the orders if it doesn't get their point. It needs to be shown to it affection and respect.
Coat & grooming
It doesn't require special care. During the moulting period it is recommended the brushing to remove the dead hair bristles.
