Temperament

The Toller is highly intelligent, easy to train and has great endurance. A strong and able swimmer, he is a natural and tenacious retriever on land and from water setting himself for springy action the moment the slightest indication is given that retrieving is required. His strong retrieving desire and playfulness are qualities essential to his tolling ability.

History

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was developed in Nova Scotia in the early 19th century to toll (or lure) and retrieve waterfowl.

Care

Fetch is a favorite of this retrieving breed. This will keep the dog sufficiently exercised and happy. However, this dog would do best with a fenced in yard, as this dog is rambunctious and lively.

Attention, exercise, socialization and training.

Health

The double coat on the Toller should be brushed all the way down to the undercoat to ensure a healthy and smooth coat. Dry shampooing works best on the coat of this breed, and should not be bathed regularly as this removes the oils from the skin and coat, which gives it the ability to be water resistant.

Training

It is an easy to train dog because it is intelligent, obedient and keen to work for its master. With a consistent and diverse training, great results can be achieved.

Coat & grooming

The fur of this dog must be weekly brushed and more often during the moulting period.

Fun facts

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever needs a job to do and lots of exercise (at least an hour of exercise a day is recommended), or he may find pesky ways to amuse himself. If you can't commit to keeping this dog both physically and mentally busy every
