Temperament

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is always busy and lively. They thrive and demand human companionship and attention. They are very intelligent, charming, and can be quite willful. This breed will typically get along with other dogs, but is not recommended for homes with cats or other household pets they will view as prey. They do well with children and are somewhat friendly to strangers. They do not do well if left alone for extended periods of time. If they become lonely or bored they will become destructive.

History

For a long time the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen had the same standard as the Grand Basset, only the size was different (from 34 to 38 cm). The result in utilization was not very brilliant, because they were semi-crooked and as heavy as the Grand Basset. That is why that M.Abel Dezamy created a separate standard for them. To define this hound, let us remember what Paul Daubigné wrote : « It is no longer a small Vendéen by simple reduction of the height, but a small Basset harmoniously reduced in all his proportions and in its volume, that is naturally endowed with all the moral qualities which presuppose the passion for hunting ». A team of Petit Bassets won the first edition of France?s Cup on rabbit.

Care

The PBGV is not content to lie around. His exercise requirements can be easily fulfilled, however, by a good walk on leash or a vigorous romp in the yard. He is happiest when dividing his time between house and yard. The coat needs weekly brushing and occasional tidying of straggling hairs.

Highly energetic, this breed needs daily vigorous exercise in an outdoor environment. They enjoy family play sessions as well as family activities in which they are included. It is vitally important to remember that the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a scent hound. Therefore, they must never be let off lead when walking or jogging. Yards must be securely fenced and they must be closely monitored and supervised as they are prone to digging and are exceedingly adept at escaping. They will do okay in an apartment provided they are sufficiently exercised.

Exercise, fenced yard, grooming and a leash.

Health

This breed requires weekly brushing to remove loose and dead hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. The ears and teeth should be checked and cleaned on a consistent basis. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is prone to eye abnormalities, aseptic meningitis, epilepsy, hip and elbow dysplasia, patella luxation, hypothyroidism, and food and skin allergies.

Training

This dog is a little stubborn, independent and that is why the training must be firm, consequent, well-balanced; the master should take care about the fear of the dog and the training to be made with patience.

Coat & grooming

The fur of this dog must be combed and brushed regularly, and once a year trimmed. The claws on the feet will be kept short and they must not have excess hair between the pads of the feet. The ears will be kept clean.

Fun facts

Some PBGVs have proven allergic to insecticides. Prone to ear infections. The coat needs regular brushing with a wire slicker to prevent matting. This dog must be well secured, as he is a renowned digger, jumper, and escape artist. Does well in most clima
