Temperament
An ideal companion. Highly adaptable in domestic and sporting surroundings. Gentle, affectionate, even disposition.
Care
The Whippet can make a good apartment dog if taken for a long walk or run daily. Grooming is minimal. The Whippet must have a warm, soft bed. He dislikes cold weather intensely and cannot be expected to live outside. The Whippet can play and run in snow and cold weather but should spend inactive times in warmer temperatures. The hair is extremely short and fine, and the whippet is virtually free of "doggy odor."
A small yard will do for this small yet active dog. A daily walk should do. Should not be let off lead unless in a fenced in yard as they will chase and kill small and fast animals. Should regularly run in a yard if possible, but will do well with no yard if given opportunities to run, perhaps in a park.
Attention, fenced yard, leash, and protection from the cold.
Health
Very easily groomed, Whippets must however be protected from the cold. His short, smooth and silky coat does not adapt well to colder climates. Averagely shedding, occasional brushing to limit shedding should suffice. Bathing every six months should be fine, as the short coat does not trap dirt well.
Training
With a firm, consequent, varied training, mixing with games and runs, with a gentle friendly voice, satisfactory results can be achieved.
Coat & grooming
The fur of this dog needs a casual brushing and combing with a glove to keep its brightness.
Fun facts
Sensitive to the cold. The skin can tear easily. A clean dog, easy to care for and easy to travel with. Deafness is a problem, particularly in predominantly white dogs.
